The ViPrimePLUS Toxoplasma gondii qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Toxoplasma gondii genomes in clinical samples (e.g. blood, CSF, amniotic fluid), food samples or water samples.
Toxoplasma gondii is a parasitic protozoan whose definitive host is cat. It infects many warm-blooded mammals including human; causing toxoplasmosis, a major foodborne and neonatal infectious disease. In healthy a-d-u-l-ts, the infection is usually self-limiting and normally asymptomatic although in some cases, flu-like symptoms are present. It remains in the body in a dormant stage until reactivation when the person is immunosuppressed. This patient may then develop the deadly toxoplasmic encephalitis. Due to the cross-placental ability of the parasite, women who are infected during the course of their pregnancy will pass the infection to their fetuses, bringing severe damages in the latter's development. Among the complications are stillborn, miscarriage, babies with abnormal head size and high risk of developing ocular diseases during a-d-u-l-thood. Association between toxoplasma infections with schizophrenia is currently being investigated. Bearing in mind the severity of the disease, routine screening and good hygiene is of great value in helping to reduce the risk of infection.
