Description
The ViPrimePLUS Babesia caballi qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Babesia caballi genome in horse blood samples.
Equine piroplasmosis is a tick-borne protozoal infection occurring in horses, mules, donkeys and zebras. Theileria equi (formerly known as Babesia equi and Babesia caballi are the responsible pathogens. Although, the disease is endemic in tropical and subtropical regions, it has been reported in other countries and continents as well. Therefore, piroplasmosis is a major constraint to the international movement of equines. Among the disease symptoms are acute fever, inappetence, malaise, anemia, laboured breathing, jaundice, sudden death, chronic weight loss and poor exercise tolerance. T. equi tends to cause more serious disease than B. caballi. Mortality rate was reported to be in a range from 10% to 50%. Although the tick vector is the primary mode of transmission, animals can be infected by contaminated syringes or needles and blood transfusion. Vertical transmission for T. equi to foals is possible, too. Recovered equids are potential long term carrier of the organisms. Other infected animals may be able to clear the organism eventually after several years. In the aspects of public health, B. caballi or T. equi may have been implicated in a few human infections in the past but these organisms do not seem to be important zoonoses. Babesia divergens and Babesia microti are the more common cause of human babesiosis.
