The ViPrimePLUS Entamoeba qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of all Entamoeba species genomes in clinical samples (e.g. faeces) and food or water samples.
Entamoeba protozoa are usually found in the large intestines of animals and humans, except E. gingivalis which resides in the mouth as a commensal. One important human pathogenic species is E. histolytica, which causes amebiasis. Most cases are asymptomatic, but bowel inflammation, dysentery and rare incidences of invasive extraintestinal disease may occur. Invasive amebiasis may result in multiorgan damage, such as amebic liver abscess due to the spread of the trophozoites in the circulatory system. Transmission is via fecal-oral route, by ingesting the cysts in contaminated food or water. Amebiasis is the fourth leading cause of death due to protozoan infections worldwide, resulting in ~70,000 deaths annually, with cases reported mostly from areas with poor sanitation.
