Bongkrekic acid is an inhibitory ligand of the mitochondrial adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT) the inner membrane channel of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore(MPTP). It inhibits mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening. At 50 μM it inhibits dexamethasone- apoptosis in thymocytes, preventing the PARP cleavage and DEVDase (caspase-3 like) activity normally produced by these treatment.
