Current research supports Cystatin C as a more-sensitive endogenous marker for estimation of Glomular Filtration Rate or GFR. Cystatin C is a very small protein and is a member of the cysteine proteinase inhibitor family, produced at a constant rate by all nucleated cells. Since Cystatin C is only 13kDa, which is considered a small protein, Cystatin C is fully reabsorbed and broken down by the renal tubules and not secreted. When the kidneys are functioning normally, concentrations of Cystatin C in the blood are stable, but as kidney function deteriorates, the concentrations begin to rise. Research also supports that levels are unaffected by race, age, mass or gender, making it the most sensitive of markers during early stages of Chronic Kidney Disease.
